Birch Tree Collection

Birch was and is of great importance to the indigenous peoples due to it’s tough, flexible and waterproof sheets of bark. It was used to everything from papering canoes, baskets, medicine and artwork. Birch is symbolic of beginnings, renewals and starting over.

I was born in the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife. My earliest memories are of birch, pine and spruce trees. My mother always took us to the cabin north of Yellowknife.  I remember never straying far from my mother in fear of being lost in the dark, quiet woods. Now I miss the quiet, the creaks and the never-ending forest.

My birch tree collection is inspired by my time in the north, the color teal and by my photo travels throughout Canada. The photos are incorporated in by color, the idea of or the feeling of my photos. The color teal means calmness, uniqueness and creative expressions with a hint of the northern lights I miss.

The red highlights in the birch represents the murdered and missing woman of Canada who never made it home. There's hints of color in the birch tree which are lost memories, buried but still there.

The Birch Tree Collection is ongoing with new pieces added throughout the year.

All are acrylic, varnished and signed.

 Mini Landscapes

My ‘dear to me’ landscapes and nature minis are based on my travels and exploring around western Canada. I am drawn to whispering fields, the quiet before a thunderstorm and murmurs of the woods. I adore these little memory snapshots that I paint.

The mini paintings change, based on my travels and experiences, therefore all are original pieces.

They are acrylic painted on 6x6’’ canvas, varnished and signed.

Prairie Landscapes

These paintings are a collection of various scenes and ranging in size. All are my representations of the photos I take. I love rich colors and these paintings are storms, prairie lines and fields. I see so flow, movement and quiet beauty. I am always down to drive the backroads and explore. The red outline in the clouds represents the murdered and missing women of Canada who have never made it home.

All are acrylic, varnished and signed.

 Dark Sky Series

The Dark Sky series is an acknowledgement of my Gwichin heritage, the stories of what made us and directed our journeys. The stars are untouchable bits of beauty that inspire me and so many others to paint. I grew up in the Northwest Territories and I miss the pitch dark nights, the glowing sky and the crackles of the Northern Lights. I've painted the night sky with billowing clouds, dark trees and hints of galaxies.

Mahsi Cho, thank you

  • Hi Esta
My son remembered your art from the new Indigenous display at Fort Edmonton. He now lives in the Bay Area near San Francisco but wants some art depicting the prairies. He has a larger space in his home office so ideally would want a larger piece. What would be the logistics and cost of getting something shipped to him safely? And do you have anything available? Thank you – your art is wonderful!
